6 KEY RAINWEAR ESSENTIALS

TECHNICAL JACKET

Men's Beta SL Jacket

Keeping dry doesn’t have to be complicated. At least not if you have a jacket with all the latest technology. To protect yourself from the weather with outerwear, you need to know what questions to ask yourself when shopping.

Andrew Todd, the lead menswear designer at British brand Finisterre, says that asking “How waterproof is it and can it breathe?” is a good place to start. He also suggests looking for the official unit used to measure water repellency. “A 20k hydrostatic head will protect you well from heavy rain,” he says.

For more basic pieces, look for things like sealed seams and elasticized cuffs that keep water out and heat in, as well as tough fabrics like nylon-ripstop.

BOOTS

Vol.10 Extra Edition -Material-

A good pair of leather boots is to rainy days like butter is to toast: you can go without, but it won’t be as enjoyable. Of course, there are a few things to think about before you cash out.

Any cobbler worth their salt will tell you that materials are quite important. “Rubber soles work best because they don’t absorb water and don’t slip like leather,” Tim Little, owner and creative director of British footwear maker Grenson, explains. “Meanwhile, the upper leather should be greasy or waxy to allow rain to drain off.

Use smarter brogue and commando sole boots to bring a bit of Tenzing to your two-piece, or dress down hiking, duck boots, or labor boots to add heft to casual rigs.

MAC

The Mac is making a comeback. However, it never really took off. That’s because this classic piece of rain gear is as ageless as winter coats go.

“Macs have always been hot,” celebrity stylist Harriet Byczok notes, “which is primarily due to designers updating the conventional with various styles every season.”

The most appealing aspect of the long-length coat is that it may be worn in rain or shine. It is frequently made of robust yet lightweight cotton-gabardine, which provides a breathable, wind, and waterproof coating to almost any outfit.

UMBRELLA

If waterproof clothing is too Norwegian fishing trawler for a four-day excursion on the North Sea, go back to the original shower shield: the umbrella.

No matter how practical you think a parachute-sized canopy constructed for the golf course is, it won’t cut it. Believe us when we say that the people whose eyes you impale as you stroll down the street will appreciate you for being sleeker.

Instead, “choose an umbrella with your whole image in mind,” advises Sarah Gilfillan, founder of men’s personal style consultant Sartoria Lab. “Should I dress in casual streetwear? Then camouflage or a bright hue will be ideal. Are you more of a fitted city gent? A deep green tartan or Prince of Wales check will be understated but fashionable.”

WEATHERPROOF SNEAKERS

Just because the skies have opened doesn’t mean you have to put your trainers away. Simply replace them with a pair that can withstand severe conditions.

Certain fabrics (such as ultra-absorbent canvas) should obviously be avoided. “Suede and nubuck are obvious ones since they are more difficult to clean,” Little explains. “However, even these aren’t impossible; simply let them dry before brushing with a suede or nubuck brush.”

Leather that is easy to clean and technological materials such as waterproof Gore-Tex has the best chance of surviving on the tundra, although added ankle height can also assist keep the water out (and avoid trench foot – never a good look).

OUTDOOR TECHNICAL

High-performance outdoor gear is useful whether you’re climbing the Matterhorn or just trying to stay dry on the way to the bar.

Technical coats might give off Antarctic explorer impressions due to their vivid colors or excessive intricacy.

Avoid this by wearing nothing else that draws notice. Dark pants, sneakers, and a sweatshirt or hoodie if necessary.

OFFICE RAIN DODGER

A rainy commute doesn’t mean rushing for the bus, clutching a briefcase over your head, and spending the day in a soaked suit. If you play your cards well, you can enter dry and smug.

Smarter ensembles call for a mac or trench coat, which has the structure of a wool overcoat without the dampness (wool, conversely, can absorb up to 20 percent of its own weight of the wet stuff).

For a more muted style, use navy or black macs instead of light beige.

WEATHERPROOF STREETWEAR

Streetwear originated on the streets. The only thing about streets is that they get damp when it rains, therefore the pieces that make them up must be ready for anything.

Windbreakers and puffer jackets are great for weather protection, so add some to your wardrobe.

Whether camo or color-blocked, a striking jacket is the fastest way to a shower-proof outfit. Add cargo pants, wide-leg jeans, chinos, chunky sneakers, and a cross-body bag.
